GATE <br />qualified candidates with Bachelor’s degree in <br />Engineering/Technology/Architecture or Master’s degree in any branch of <br />Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for <br />admission to Master/Doctoral programmes in <br />Engineering/Technology/Architecture as well as for Doctoral programmes <br />in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other government <br />scholarships/assistantships. To avail the scholarship, the candidate <br />must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the <br />prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. However, candidates <br />with Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture may seek <br />admission to relevant PhD programmes with scholarship/assistantship <br />without appearing in the GATE examination. <br />Some institutions specify GATE qualification as mandatory even for <br />admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE <br />qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research <br />Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Top rank <br />holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad <br />Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR. The name and code of the merged paper will be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS).<br />3 Papers discontinued from GATE 2009 onwards<br />Computational Science and Electrical Sciences sections have been discontinued in XE paper with effect from GATE 2009.<br />4. Papers discontinued from GATE 2010 onwards<br />It has been decided to discontinue the offering of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PY) paper with effect from GATE 2010.<br />5 Change in Structure of GATE Papers<br /><br /> There is a Change in Structure of GATE Papers in GATE 2009.<br /><br />In GATE 2009 examination paper will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 60 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions. Each question will have four choices for the answer. Only one choice will be correct. GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper<br />There is a Change in the Structure of GG paper in GATE 2009<br />The GG paper will consist of two parts: Part A and Part B. Geology candidates will attempt questions in Section 1 only. Geophysics candidates will attempt questions in Section 2 only.<br /> There will be a total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks. Calculus: Functions of single variable, limit, continuity and differentiability, mean value theorems, evaluation of definite and improper integrals, partial derivatives, total derivative, maxima and minima, gradient, divergence and curl, vector identities, directional derivatives, line, surface and volume integrals. Theorems of Stokes, Gauss and Green.<br /><br />Differential Calculus: First order linear and nonlinear equations, higher order linear ODEs with constant coefficients, Cauchy and Euler equations, initial and boundary value problems, Laplace transforms.
